Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
