Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
